    The Bradford & Airedale Health of Men initiative: a study of its effectiveness in engaging with men

    The Health of Men (HoM) network received funding from the Big Lottery Fund in 2003 to establish a five year programme of dedicated work with men and boys. This enabled a team of practitioners to be creative and to build upon their existing skills to generate models of working with those men in the community that are usually seen as hard to reach. The research which has accompanied of the work of team has explored why men use these new services and has demonstrated the following: • Men do care about their health • Men are willing and able to engage with their health when services are tailored to their needs • Men from different culture groups and socio-economic backgrounds who are normally seen as hard to reach were accessed. • A model encompassing a dedicated team working with men is worthy of further development Much has been learnt from this project that has great relevance to the local Primary Care Trust (PCT), but has also proved a great source of information for the development of services to men on a Regional, National and International level

    Given a complete Heyting algebra we construct an algebraic tensor triangulated category whose Bousfield lattice is the Booleanization of the given Heyting algebra. As a consequence we deduce that any complete Boolean algebra is the Bousfield lattice of some tensor triangulated category.     Identities among relations for higher-dimensional rewriting systems

    We generalize the notion of identities among relations, well known for presentations of groups, to presentations of n-categories by polygraphs. To each polygraph, we associate a track n-category, generalizing the notion of crossed module for groups, in order to define the natural system of identities among relations.     Changes in the concentration and size-distribution of the sub-micron particles associated with the sea- and land-breezes at a coastal station

    Surface measurements of the size-distribution of submicron aerosol particles in the range of 0.003 to 1 μm diameter have been made on 6-8 January 1998, at Thiruvananthapuram during an inter-comparison campaign of the Indian Ocean experiment (INDOEX). The results are studied with respect to the setting-in of the sea- and land-breezes at the station. Observations show an increase of up to an order of magnitude in aerosol concentrations of all size categories with the setting-in of the land breeze at 1800-1900 IST. High concentrations of aerosol particles prevail throughout the period of the land breeze at night-time. Aerosol concentrations remarkably decrease at about 1000 IST with the arrival of much cleaner air with the sea breeze. During the land breeze at night-time, the size-distributions of aerosol particles is bimodal with the maximum at 0.075 and 0.024 μm diameters. During the sea breeze, especially in the afternoon, the maximum in the accumulation mode shifts to a slightly higher size (0.133 μm) and the maximum in the nucleation mode seems to shift to a smaller size (0.013 μm or smaller). The size-distribution curves during the daytime are mostly open-ended at the small particle-size end. The enhanced coagulation of aerosol particles and the gas-to-particle conversion processes have been proposed to explain the shift of maxima in the accumulation mode and the enhanced generation of small particles in the nucleation mode in the afternoon, respectively

    Accumulation of Proline under Salinity and Heavy metal stress in Cauliflower seedlings

    Salinity and heavy metals affect the growth and development of higher plants and also their productivity. In the present study, Cauliflower (Brassica oleracea var botrytis) seeds were allowed to germinate andgrow in the absence (control) and presence of different concentrations (50, 100, 250, 500, 750 and 1000 ìM) of NaCl, CdCl2, HgCl2 and ZnCl2. Seed germination and growth parameters of seedlings of cauliflower were observed after 5, 10 and 15 days of exposure to salinity and heavy metals. In case of salinity, maximum inhibition of seedling growth was observed at 250 ìM of NaCl which resulted into 66%, 67%, 61%, 56% and 25% inhibition in seed germination, shoot length, root length, fresh weight and dry weight, respectively after 5 days of germination. NaCl at500-ìM concentration and above completely inhibited seed germination. In case of heavy metals, HgCl2 was found to be the most toxic one with 94% inhibition in seed germination at 250 ìM concentrations. Shoot length, root length, fresh weight and dry weights were inhibited by 69%, 88%, 66% and 71% respectively, after 5 days of growth in presence of HgCl2 (250 ìM). On the other hand, only 66% and 55% inhibition in seed germination was observed with as high concentration as 1000 ìM of both CdCl2 and ZnCl2 respectively, after 5 days of seed growth. Further, the extent of reduction in shoot length, root length, fresh weight and dry weight in presence of both CdCl2 and ZnCl2 was found to be less than HgCl2. In general development of root system was severely inhibited in presence of NaCl,CdCl2, ZnCl2 and HgCl2 at all the concentration tested as evidenced by decrease in root length.     Eclipsing Binaries Showing Light Time Effect

    Four eclipsing binaries, which show apparent changes of period, have been studied with respect to a possible presence of the light time effect. With a least squares method we calculated new light elements of these systems, the mass function of the predicted third body, and its minimum mass.     Behavioral implications of shortlisting procedures

    We consider two-stage “shortlisting procedures” in which the menu of alternatives is first pruned by some process or criterion and then a binary relation is maximized. Given a particular first-stage process, our main result supplies a necessary and sufficient condition for choice data to be consistent with a procedure in the designated class. This result applies to any class of procedures with a certain lattice structure, including the cases of “consideration filters,” “satisficing with salience effects,” and “rational shortlist methods.” The theory avoids background assumptions made for mathematical convenience; in this and other respects following Richter’s classical analysis of preference-maximizing choice in the absence of shortlisting
